Using the system layer requires you to have detailed knowledge of the protocol you are using, but it also allows more flexibility than the dialog layer. For example, the standard APPC dialog provided by the basic VA Smalltalk product does support irregular patterns of communication such as a single send. If you program in VA Smalltalk parts, you can use the system layer to initiate irregular patterns of communication through scripts.
