FREE WEBCAST:
Quality as a Deliverable

Improving Eclipse-based applications through automation

Organizations building RCP applications struggle to maintain quality at reasonable cost in the face of shrinking budgets and larger, more complex applications. While, conceptually software professionals understand the value of utilizing technology and automation to achieve higher quality, they often lack time, knowledge and resources to make quality a deliverable, enforcing these practices. In this webinar, Instantiations and InfoStretch provide concrete steps that can be taken to incrementally improve quality through continuous integration, static analysis, metrics, test automation and code coverage.

Instantiations Supports Eclipse 3.4 and Ganymede

Instantiations' entire Eclipse-based product line has been updated to coincide with the annual Eclipse open source release, Ganymede, Ganymedewhich includes Eclipse 3.4, released June 25, 2008. Significant enhancements were made to all products (especially CodePro AnalytiX — see below). Performance and usability were also enhanced across all product lines.

And very importantly, in addition to supporting the new Eclipse 3.4 release, Instantiations product updates support prior versions of Eclipse and IDEs built upon Eclipse — for those of you that won't get to 3.4 just yet.

Download the latest product releases with the following new functionality:

CodePro AnalytiX™ 5.5 — enhanced Management Dashboard in Server Edition, as well as dozens of new security audit rules, based on the OWASP Top Ten standards. This enables developers to automatically detect and address security vulnerabilities as they are writing code, thus closing the opportunities for potential malicious users, and focusing on quality earlier in the software development lifecycle.

WindowBuilder™ 6.7 — newly validated Ready for IBM Rational Software, and added support for Eclipse 3.4 data binding in SWT Designer

WindowTester™ 3.5 — new recording interface provided

CodePro Profiler™ 1.5 — optimizes memory use and provides better overall performance and usability

RCP Developer™ 3.5 — inherits new features from WindowTester and SWT Designer detailed above

It might be because I started my career in software on the QA side of the house, or maybe it's just the years of managing projects and trying to balance the three legs of the development cycle (cost/time/quality), but I find myself more and more using this phrase, treat quality as a deliverable. I realized just how much I'm using it these days as I sat in a meeting with one of our larger customers and delivered an impassioned plea arguing for quantifiable quality criteria as a deliverable requirement from the outset of any new project.

Every customer I visit always tells me the same story, "we would like to do more JUnit testing, but we just don't have the time." generic project scheduleFace it, when the deadline is fast approaching and the product isn't feature complete, who takes the time to write their test code or fix simple coding violations? When all is said and done, the main thing we're usually held accountable for is delivering a finished product on time. But we all know that isn't the whole story. And we all know that if you deliver a product with defects, the cost of remedying those defects goes through the roof!

But what if, as we scoped the project, we included quality as a form of deliverable necessary for the completion of the project? If we placed quantifiable requirements and held fast that those requirements be met prior to completing the project?
