One of the challenges we all face in fighting the quality battle is the shortage of time. Be it tight delivery schedules or just not enough hours in a day, time rarely facilitates the emphasis necessary for truly high-quality software development practices. And — let's be honest — when something has to give, quality standards are frequently relaxed.
In the development process at Instantiations we have succeeded (I think, at least!) in managing these challenges by taking advantage of something that essentially gives us more time, and allows us to maintain high quality standards throughout the development cycle.
We achieved this by automating many of our code quality processes into our existing build system. Now, when our nightly builds run, an automated code review takes place, JUnit code coverage is tracked, JUnit test results are recorded, and gen eral coding metrics are captured.
By using the new CodePro AnalytiX Server edition, our build engineer was able to tap into the audit, code coverage, and metrics capabilities in CodePro during the actual build process. That means that we get all the same quality monitoring and enforcement we have always relied upon, but now it happens unattended and after hours so we don't lose any time or resources!
Plus, with the new dashboard capabilities, project managers can monitor HTML reports, tracking all aspects of their code quality throughout the build cycles.

Announced at EclipseCon, March 17, 2008 — Instantiations has teamed with CodeGear™, a leader in developer tools, to integrate Swing Designer, a popular member of the WindowBuilder family, into JBuilder® 2008. With the introduction of JBuilder 2008 on April 1, CodeGear will provide Swing Designer visual layout tools as an integrated feature of its popular Java IDE which is based on the Eclipse open source framework.
Using JBuilder 2008, Java developers will be able to easily construct sophisticated, reliable Swing-based GUIs that enhance the user experience for enterprise applications.
The integration will give JBuilder developers complete control over how they develop their GUI code using Swing Designer's bi-directional code generation (round-trip editing capabilities), and comprehensive support for Swing layouts, controls, containers, and other capabilities.
|
"We're all familiar with the Java GUI solutions of late which are either feature-light, too fragile, or inject proprietary footprints. Java GUI developers have been vocal about wanting a more advanced out-of-the-box GUI construction experience and feature set that is easy-to-use and fully source-code driven. We've integrated the Instantiations Swing Designer into JBuilder to meet these expectations, and are excited to be the only Java IDE vendor to have such an offering."
—Michael Swindell, CodeGear Vice President of Products and Strategy
