It is highly recommended that you version all loaded Projects in Visual Age for Java
before unloading VA Assist.
Please check the VA Assist history page to
see if you need to
unload
the VA Assist/J Debug Utilities
as well as VA Assist - step #2 below. If you are unsure, it never
hurts to unload the debug utilities before installing a new version of VA Assist.
1. In the VisualAge for Java "Log" Window, select the "Workspace ->
Unload VA Assist" menu item. This menu item does not appear in any other VisualAge
for Java windows except the "Log" window.

Once this menu item has been selected, look in the VisualAge for Java
"Log" window for a message indicating that either VA Assist unloaded
successfully or failed to unload.
During the unload process, VA Assist renames
<VAJ_ROOT>\ide\ics\com-instantiations-vaa\default.ini
to
<VAJ_ROOT>\ide\ics\com-instantiations-vaa\_default.ini
so that VA Assist will not be automatically reloaded the next time that you restart
VisualAge for Java. If you want reinstall VA Assist, then you will need to manually rename
this file back to its original name so that VA Assist will be automatically loaded the
next time you restart VisualAge for Java.
2. After performing step #1 above, select the "Workspace -> Unload VA Assist
Debug Utilities" menu item in the VisualAge for Java "Log" Window. This
menu item does not appear in any other VisualAge for Java windows except the
"Log" window and it does not appear until after VA Assist
itself has successfully been unloaded. If you are unsure, it never hurts to unload
the debug utilities before installing a new version of VA Assist.
Once this menu item has been selected, look in the VisualAge for Java
"Log" window for a message indicating that either VA Assist Debug Utilities
unloaded successfully or failed to unload.
Version 2.0.5 of VA Assist introduces an enhanced error logging facility
and an enhanced unloader facility. We recommend that, if you have
an older version of VA Assist installed, you completely delete the three
VA Assist IC directories (\ide\ics\com-instantiations-vaa*) and
replace your IDE.ICX file with a new one before you install
VA Assist 2.0.5. This is not required, however, and, if you don't do this,
the existing error logging and unloader facilities will be used.
If you are installing into a new VA Java 3.5.3 or 4.0 installation, these new
facilities will automatically be installed. Do not install VA Java 3.5.3
or 4.0 on top of your existing VA Java
3.0/3.02/3.5 installation without first deleting/un-installing any
existing VA Assist
files. Versions of VA Assist prior to 2.0.5 should not be
used with VA Java 3.5.3 and versions prior to 2.0.8 should not
be used with 4.0.
See the FAQ for further details.
3. Once you have successfully unloaded an earlier version of VA Assist, follow the
instructions in Installing VA Assist to load the current version
of VA Assist.
Make sure that you save your workspace or exit VisualAge for Java using
the normal "Exit VisualAge" command (which will also save your
workspace) before installing the new version of VA Assist. The VisualAge for Java
workspace file records which version of VA Assist is loaded, so if you
exit without saving the workspace (or you switch to another workspace that
has a different version of VA Assist loaded), VisualAge for Java will
think that the older version of VA Assist is still loaded and will fail
with an Error 33/37 when you install the
new version of VA Assist and re-start the product.
If VA Assist fails to unload, please close all VisualAge for Java windows except the
"Log" window, and try to unload VA Assist again. In addition, please reporting
the problem to Instantiations by following the directions in VA
Assist Support. If VA Assist fails to unload again, you may need to rebuild your image
with a clean IDE.ICX rather than selecting "Unload VA
Assist..." from the Workspace menu. A clean IDE.ICX file can be found in a zip
file in the backup directory on your IBM VisualAge for Java installation
CD or from the this page. It is
highly recommended that you version all loaded Projects in Visual Age for Java before
starting with a clean IDE.ICX. See the FAQ for further details.
Note that if you just purchased the product and already had an evaluation version
of VA Assist loaded, you do not need to re-install it. Just follow the
instructions for Unlocking a Purchased Product to fully activate
it.
