VA Assist: Installation Instructions

The following files are installed. Each file should be placed into the VisualAge image directory.

  • READMEVA.RTF - Readme file.
  • VAAST60.DAT- This is an VisualAge export library that contains the configuration map for VAA (for use with either the Windows or OS/2 versions of VisualAge).
  • VAAST60.PDF - On-Line manual in Adobe Acrobat format. This requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.

Installing VAA into the VisualAge Image

To install VAA, bring up the VisualAge image. Bring up a Configuration Maps Browser, and import all of the configuration maps into the library from the VAAST60.DAT manager file (if they are not already there). Then load (with required maps) either the VA Assist Pro for VisualAgeor VA Gen Assist for VisualAge Generator"V6.0.2" configuration into your image.

If this copy of VAA is a fully licensed copy, you may also register it via the menu item "VA Assist Pro | Register" or VA Gen Assist | Registerunder the Tools pulldown. Unregistered copies of VAA will only work for 30 days.
Note on Unloading

To un-install the VAA package use the VAA "Un-Install" command. Use this command rather than either the Configuration Maps Browser or Application Manager unload commands or the Load/Unload Features dialog. None of these "traditional" unloading options will work due to the existence of instances of various VAA classes. Be aware that any VAA enhanced browser will be closed during the un-install process.

WidgetKit/Controls: Installation Instructions

WidgetKit/Controls includes the following files:

  • READMEWC.RTF - Readme file
  • WKCTRL60.DAT - This is a VisualAge export library that contains the configuration map for WidgetKit/Controls.
  • WKCTRL60.PDF - On-Line manual in Adobe Acrobat format. This requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.

Installing WK/C into the VA Smalltalk Image

NOTE TO WBPRO USERS: If you are going to use WK/C with WindowBuilder Pro, please install WBPro first.

To install WK/C, bring up the VisualAge image. Then open the Configuration Maps Browser, and import all of the configuration maps into the library from the WKCTRL60.DAT manager file. Then load (with required maps) the WidgetKit/Controls "V6.0.1" configuration into your image.

When WK/C has finished loading, a new pulldown menu (WidgetKit) will appear in the Transcript window. You can execute the WK/C examples by choosing the menu item "Controls | Examples" under the WidgetKit pulldown. This menu item opens a launcher which allows you to select the example from the list and open or edit it.

If this copy of WK/C is a fully licensed copy, you may also register it via the menu item "Controls | Register" under the WidgetKit pulldown. Unregistered copies of WK/C will only work for 30 days.

GF/ST: Installation Instructions

Installation proceeds in two steps. The first, discussed here, is to install the files from the ZIP file. The second step is to load GF/ST into a Smalltalk image, as discussed in 3.0.

Installing GF/ST into the VA Smalltalk Image

For the first installation of GF/ST, we recommend a virgin base image.

IMPORTANT: You MUST have the \RESOURCE directory installed as a subdirectory of your working directory before you open either the Drawing Editor or the Demo Launcher for GF/ST.

Start up VA Smalltalk 4.02b, 4.5a, 5.0, 5.5 or 6.0 (or higher). From the Configuration Maps Browser, select 'Import...' and point at the GFSTVA60.DAT file you just installed. Import all of the configuration maps in that ENVY library:

  • GF Calendar Goodie IBM/ST
  • GF/ST Graph Layout Demo IBM/ST
  • GF/ST Graph Layout IBM/ST
  • GF/ST Demo IBM/ST
  • GF/ST IBM/ST
  • GF/ST IBM/ST - Runtime
  • Visual Inspector (TM) IBM/ST
  • WindowBuilder Pro - Runtime
  • WindowBuilder Pro - Runtime Prereqs

To load all of GF/ST and the demos, you can select 'load with all required maps' after selecting the 'GF/ST Demo IBM/ST' configuration map. To load the minimum required for base GF/ST functionality, load only the 'GF/ST IBM/ST' configuration map.

Following installation, you must save image. If you do not save, you may lose all of the installation changes if something goes wrong later, and you will have to re-load GF/ST. You may want to keep a copy of this image and the corresponding changes file for future use, since it contains a virgin image with GF/ST installed.

The RESOURCE subdirectory contains bitmap files in BMP format which are used in various areas of GF/ST. The bitmaps are held externally and converted to Images in a lazy initialization technique, as they are needed.
